‘Red Head’ Fountain Grass dazzles with 10-inch bottlebrush plumes emerging burgundy-red in mid-to-late summer. Plumes shift a golden hue in fall and remain in place throughout winter. Flowing, ribbon-like grass blades adds texture and motion. ‘Red Head’ stands apart as one of the earliest-flowering fountain grasses. An excellent cut flower, fresh or dried. (Pennisetum alopecuriodes)

Plant Information

36-48” tall x 48-60" wide. ‘Red Head’ Fountain Grass truly lives up to its name, with narrow blades growing in graceful, fountain-like mounds. Leaves take on yellow highlights in autumn. A water-wise perennial, ‘Red Head’ is stunning when mass planted. The unique floral plumes also make a fine specimen or accent in small gardens and containers. This low-maintenance grass is drought tolerant once established. Bird friendly and deer resistant, ‘Red Head’ makes a fine addition to wildlife gardens. Plants are tolerant of a wide range of soil conditions, just be careful not to plant too deep. Set crowns just at or above the soil surface when planting. Cut back foliage to the ground in late winter before new growth emerges. Plants are fast growing and will quickly fill a prominent place in the sun garden.

Comments about American Meadows Red Head Fountain Grass:

I purchased 90 of the Red Fountain Grass plants in the Spring of 2016. All of them are thriving to date, 10/16. I planted them in raised beds bordering a long concrete driveway, full sun, three plants per container. I live in south-central Texas where heat can be brutal and seasonal rainfall scarce. We received record rainfall this summer and I have all of my plants on supplemental drip irrigation as a back-up. I am extremely pleased that the deer have avoided grazing on these grasses thus far.

Q & A

Plant With These:

USDA Hardiness Planting Zones

To determine if a plant is sufficiently cold hardy, the USDA created numbered zones indicating winter low temperatures; the lower the zone number the colder the winter.

  • If the coldest winter temperature expected in your area is -15°F (zone 5) then any plants rated zones 3-5 will survive the winter temperatures in your area.
  • If you live in very warm winter areas (zones 9-11) plants with zones 3-4 ratings are not recommended. The lack of freezing winter temperatures do not provide a time for winter dormancy (rest).
