'Big Blue' Liriope is a low-maintenance groundcover for the most challenging sites. Spikes of blue-violet blooms complement deep green arching foliage in late summer, and almost black berries in fall. Plants tolerate a range of conditions from full sun to shade, clay to sandy soils, and wet or dry sites. Liriope provides excellent erosion control, and is often used as a lawn alternative or groundcover. Evergreen foliage in warm southern climates. Plants are rabbit and deer-proof, making 'Big Blue' an easy choice for the no-fuss gardener. (Liriope muscari)

USDA Hardiness Planting Zones

To determine if a plant is sufficiently cold hardy, the USDA created numbered zones indicating winter low temperatures; the lower the zone number the colder the winter.

  • If the coldest winter temperature expected in your area is -15°F (zone 5) then any plants rated zones 3-5 will survive the winter temperatures in your area.
  • If you live in very warm winter areas (zones 9-11) plants with zones 3-4 ratings are not recommended. The lack of freezing winter temperatures do not provide a time for winter dormancy (rest).

Plant Information

12-24"‘ tall x 12-24" wide. 'Big Blue' Liriope Grass stands up to the toughest conditions, tolerating heat, humidity, air pollution, and drought. Plant large masses as a grassy groundcover in shaded sites, or use to edge beds and pathways. The tidy mounds are also perfect for tucking among perennials. 'Big Blue' is at home in rock gardens, woodland gardens, and containers. An excellent plant for transitioning from sun to shade. Also known as 'monkey grass' or 'lily turf', Liriope is often used as a grass substitute in low-traffic areas of the landscape, and it provides a great solution for soil cover in shady areas where turf won’t grow. Foliage can be cleaned up in early spring to remove brown tips. Use a sharp shear to cut leaf tips or mow  plants back hard.
