USDA Hardiness Planting Zones

To determine if a plant is sufficiently cold hardy, the USDA created numbered zones indicating winter low temperatures; the lower the zone number the colder the winter.

  • If the coldest winter temperature expected in your area is -15°F (zone 5) then any plants rated zones 3-5 will survive the winter temperatures in your area.
  • If you live in very warm winter areas (zones 9-11) plants with zones 3-4 ratings are not recommended. The lack of freezing winter temperatures do not provide a time for winter dormancy (rest).

Plant Information
(28-32” tall x 24” wide) 'Coral Reef' Oriental Poppy quickly emerges from dormancy in early spring and delivers a stunning feature only a few short weeks later. The large 6” flowers bloom in late spring with an enchanting warm pink with deep purple-black stamens, which look fabulous in vases and attract pollinators. Gardeners will appreciate those blossoms in the border or in the vase. Plant 'Coral Reef' Oriental Poppy in full sun or part shade in fertile, well-drained soils. Deer and rabbit resistant for worry-free gardening. Oriental Poppies are long-lived, and establish a deep taproot, which can be temperamental if you choose to move them mid-season - although pieces of root left after a move may result in a new plant next season. To take advantage of the long-lasting blooms as cut flowers, boil the bottom of the cut stems in water before putting in a vase to thwart the milky sap which stops water uptake. Plants will go dormant in mid-summer, so consider planting them near summer stunners that need a little time to get going in the spring.
