'Veitch’s Blue' Echinops (also called small globe thistle) is a unique stand out in the full-sun garden. Showy, golf ball-shaped flowers are true blue. A hardy, low maintenance plant, 'Veitch's Blue' is a great choice for dry soils and low rainfall areas, becoming drought-tolerant after reaching maturity. (Echinops ritro)

Plant Information

35-39" tall x 18-24" wide, globe thistle grows all across North America, and is loved by dried flower arrangers. The basic form is a tall plant, but hybrids like Veitch's Blue grow only to about 3 feet. The color is a beautiful foil in a perennial garden, and the unique flower shape is great, too.

This plant demands almost desert-like conditions, thriving in almost any soil that is in full sun and drains quickly. Once established, its a very tough plant, and can survive with almost no attention.

Comments about American Meadows Veitch's Blue Echinops:

Grew to nice looking plants, good leaf spread - but again, no stalks nor blooms. I'm in zone 3-4 so less time to grow. Maybe blooms next year.

Comments about American Meadows Veitch's Blue Echinops:

All three roots grew. I didn't get flowers the first year, but did not expect any. They overwintered in zone 5 and all have come back this spring. I hope to get some flowers this year!

Comments about American Meadows Veitch's Blue Echinops:

The plants I received were very healthy and started growing really fast- even with minimal watering. I am very sad to report that only one bloom survived the critters though. Maybe not deer, but something loves to eat this plant in my garden. They hardly have any leaves left. If you don't have rabbit/squirrel issues, I would highly recommend this plant, otherwise steer clear.

            Q & A

            Plant With These:

            USDA Hardiness Planting Zones

To determine if a plant is sufficiently cold hardy, the USDA created numbered zones indicating winter low temperatures; the lower the zone number the colder the winter.

            • If the coldest winter temperature expected in your area is -15°F (zone 5) then any plants rated zones 3-5 will survive the winter temperatures in your area.
            • If you live in very warm winter areas (zones 9-11) plants with zones 3-4 ratings are not recommended. The lack of freezing winter temperatures do not provide a time for winter dormancy (rest).
