Plant Information

Also called American Bugbane and sometimes Black Snakeroot, this wild perennial is more popular with gardeners all the time. Its tall, so best in the background, where its towers of flowers (up to 8 ft.) will light up the woods.

Black Cohosh likes wet woods, thickets, and is native all the way from Eastern Canada into Georgia.

By the way, this is one native that has recently been reclassified. Most still call it Cimicifuga racemosa, but the official botanical name is now Actaea racemosa.

Comments about American Meadows Black Cohosh:

I use these plants to accent one part of my back garden area. I bought 3 pants and should have enclosed them-now the garden is engulfed with them and surrounds small red maple!! Once established hard to get rid of--grows by runners...invasive.

Classic understory forest plant

Pros

  • Fragrant

Cons

    Best Uses

Comments about American Meadows Black Cohosh:

Fragrant in the evening. Just one flower stem will scent the yard. This plant is fussy about its location. It likes a spot similar to clematis. And it needs water. Cool ground, sun on top.

Comments about American Meadows Black Cohosh:

planted 3. I think 2 grew, but it could be all 3. Foliage is very similar to astilbe, of which I have many. I staked the location, so I am fairly sure it is the cohosh there. Hopefully by next year they will be taller and I can be sure.

only one of three came up--but a beauty

Comments about American Meadows Black Cohosh:

Two out of three of these never came up. THe third came up the first year, but didn't show flower until second year--but what a treat! I'll have to call on AM's guarantee to get the other two replaced, because it's worth trying again and that one would look super if it was in a group.

Comments about American Meadows Black Cohosh:

I was really counting on the black cohosh and am so disappointed. I planted exactly by "the book". Maybe it was a bad batch or something but I surely am not willing to take a chance again. My money is too tight!

Comments about American Meadows Black Cohosh:

I was not successful with these roots. None of them had taken. However, in Illinois is has been extremely hot and dry so I have ordered another package of these to try again in the cooler temps.

          Q & A

          Plant With These:

          USDA Hardiness Planting Zones

To determine if a plant is sufficiently cold hardy, the USDA created numbered zones indicating winter low temperatures; the lower the zone number the colder the winter.

          • If the coldest winter temperature expected in your area is -15°F (zone 5) then any plants rated zones 3-5 will survive the winter temperatures in your area.
          • If you live in very warm winter areas (zones 9-11) plants with zones 3-4 ratings are not recommended. The lack of freezing winter temperatures do not provide a time for winter dormancy (rest).
