Overview
‘Chocolate Chip’ Ajuga features dense, glossy, foliage with a chocolate-brown hue that spreads to create a lovely groundcover. The compact mounds of foliage have a tight, mat-forming habit, contrasting against lacy blue blooms in spring and early summer. This dwarf Ajuga works best in containers, under large perennials, or between pavers, as its vigorous growth adapts where other plants struggle to thrive.

Description

‘Chocolate Chip’ Ajuga (Ajuga x tenorii 'Valfredda') is a dwarf variety that shares its family’s trait of glossy, colorful foliage that helps suppress weeds and control erosion. It’s easy to grow and is deer- and rabbit-resistant. The long, narrow, oval leaves take on a chocolate color with burgundy highlights in spring. Bluish-purple flower spikes attract all kinds of pollinators. Chocolate Chip Ajuga prefers partial to full shade and moist well-drained soil, but it's highly adaptable. Do not plant in heavy clay and avoid overcrowding, as it is susceptible to crown rot. It doesn’t need trimming or deadheading, but it’s recommended to divide the plant when it gets too crowded.
