About Astilbes: Easy to grow, tough and hardy, Astilbes are now a mainstay in all good perennial gardens. In fact, American gardeners are in the midst of a passionate love affair with Astilbes. Native to the far east, these beautiful plants and their hybrids have revolutionized the perennial possibilities of moist, shaded American gardens. They are companions of ferns and our favorite annuals, impatiens--one of the few flowers that make big color in full or partial shade.
The vast majority of the scores of hybrids now available are the work of one man, master hybridizer Georg Arends (Yes, that's why you keep seeing arendsii tacked onto hybrid names.) Mr. Arends, working in Ronsdorf, Germany spent decades hybridizing Sedums, Phlox, Campanulas....and his first love, Astilbes. In 1933, Arends introduced 74 different Astilbe cultivars, and there have been hundreds since.
These plume-flowered plants have ultra-handsome fern-like foliage, (usually dark glossy green) and stiff stems that always hold the elegant plumes aloft without any staking. Flower arrangers find the flower plumes are just as handsome in a vase as in a garden.
From tiny dwarfs to big draping hybrids, Astilbes are all quite easy to grow, as long as their ground does not dry out for long. They must have plenty of moisture, so choose your locations carefully.

"Only half the plants have sprouted after a month. The location for these should be very good and I make sure they are damp every day if it hasn't rained. We followed the directions for planting including making very large holes and adding peat moss. I hope they survive the winter so that maybe next year they grow more and produce blooms? The biggest sprouts are maybe 2 inches tall and the smaller ones 1/2 inch."
"I was very disappointed in the astible roots I received. I ordered 3 and put them in a border with other astibles, that have emerged and one has even flowered. These plants never even emerged. I dug one up and the roots were dead. I won't be ordering plants like this again."
"I received three plants as roots 10 days ago. Planted right away and by the next day I could see a small baby plant breaking through the dirt! It's been 10 days and the plants are about 5 inches tall, healthy, vigorous. I am very excited at the quality and vigor of these plants. So happy with having ordered from American Meadows!"
"Nice growth, but after several months now there are no flowers. In all fairness I thought they would get a lot of shade, however, I did not realize they would get full sun in the summer (and Texas coastal heat). During fall through spring, the area is completely shaded which is what I understand these plants prefer. So, I am hoping they make it through the summer and flower this fall and spring."
"Better than expected versus some I ordered from competitors."
"Plants were very healthy when received. They are struggling a bit now since my area is very hot and dry (Sunland, CA) so I planted them in a variety of shady spots in my garden. But I am unsure if the temperatures may be too extreme. Astilbe do OK in another local garden. Too much light? Too little as placed? We'll see. Astilbe are lovely plants so I hope at least one locale will be OK. It's worth trying."
"I plant these under a tree at our campsite. They did not bloom very well this year but they usually bloom in June and I just planted them this year. I am going to order more and plant them this fall. I am expecting them to do fantastic next year and have beautiful pink feathery blooms under my tree next year."
"I planted this Astilbe in a mixed-sun flower bed. It was placed toward the back, and grew beautifully, as a backgound flower. The color blended well with the mix of purples, pinks, and yellows I had chosen, and the darker green leaves set off it's beautiful pink flowers. It does take up a lot of space, as it grows quickly, so you need to make sure there is plenty of room around it to grow!!"
"this plant is growing and thriving right under a large holly bush, in the shade."
"The description before I purchased this buld was the best ever allowing to decide exactly what I wanted in the area that I choose to plane my new flower bed"
