Tall, dark, and handsome, 'Señor Jinx' Bearded Iris will enchant you with velvety black blooms. Emerging in mid-spring, upper petals show just a hint of purple above the opulent coal-black falls. 'Señor Jinx' holds up to seven ruffled flowers per stem, each with a bright yellow beard to draw your eye into the ruffles. Upright lancelike foliage adds texture to beds and borders for low-maintenance beauty. (Iris germanica)

"I purchased and planted this iris two years in a row now. The first year, I planted two rhizomes; one died over the winter and the second grew well and produced one stalk with several flowers. Sadly, as soon as it bloomed, a storm came through and snapped the one stalk. The second year, I planted two additional rhizomes and again, one died over the winter. The second rhizome is still growing, but has not produced a very impressive fan of leaves so far. The original rhizome clump from the first year has increased in size, but still only produced one stalk with a few flowers. The flowers are not as black as they were the first year, but are now dark purple. In the photo I have the stalk staked as a precaution, since we had some high winds this week, but it doesn't need the support ordinarily and I'll remove the stake once it finishes blooming. I don't know if I would recommend this variety given the 50% failure rate of the rhizomes so far. Maybe it's bad luck?"
