From late spring to early summer, ‘Seward’ Bearded Iris lights the garden with fragrant, decadently ruffled blooms. Standards of pale lavender top bouncy ruffled falls in a rich purple hue, with a crips white edge. Bright orange beards peek out, beckoning to bumblebees. The stately presence of this Bearded Iris harmonizes beautifully with the many colors of a garden and can create a beautiful focal point. Description

Growing Bearded Irises: Named for the Greek goddess of the rainbow, Irises are majestic flowers that have been developed into an amazing array of colors, with upright sword-shaped foliage that adds elegant texture to the garden even after flowers have passed. “Standards” are the upright petals, and “falls” are the lower petals. Bearded Irises are surprisingly easy to grow, with late spring blooms that bridge the gap from spring into summer. They are deer resistant, rabbit resistant, and drought-resistant, making them a great choice for low-maintenance gardens. Bearded Irises grow vigorously from rhizomes - an irregularly shaped bulbous root that grows at a right angle from the foliage. Over time, the rhizomes will spread and multiply, delivering even more Bearded Iris blooms to your garden as the years pass.

"I purchased9 Seward Bearded Iris rhizomes from American Meadows in April 2023, and they were shipped to me in August 2023. I can't remember exactly when I planted them, but I think it wasn't until the Spring 2024 that I got them into the ground, which is late. The plants themselves grew last summer, without flowering (not surprising given when I planted them). This Spring (2025), the very first flowers are starting to bloom. I was so excited to discover them in my garden this afternoon. They're beautiful, and quite eye-catching! I will attach some photos below."
