This perennial beauty is native to the Southwest US and is extremely easy to grow, tolerating dry soil and drought. The gorgeous yellow flowers get their name from exuding a strong, rich chocolate scent in the morning. Chocolate Flower prefers as much sun as possible and well-draining soil. (Berlandiera lyrata)

My New Garden Favorite

"Chocolate Flower has quickly become my favorite garden plant! Its unique habits are fascinating — each evening, the yellow petals curl up as if going to sleep, reopening with the morning sun. In fall, it produces charming seed pods that make wonderful accents in dried bouquets. It has petals that are bright yellow-gold on top, and striped chocolate brown and gold on the reverse. Somewhat bushy growth habit, reminds me of dwarf cosmos. The best part about this flower? Its rich chocolate scent, with hints of anise, is incredible! I caught strong whiffs from up to 25 feet away. The scent is best in the morning and evening. It proved very easy to grow, thriving in well-drained soil with minimal water. I had great success growing it both in a garden bed and a small planter on my deck."
