A magnet for birds, this old favorite is great for edging the border and using in rock gardens. Or, plant it in pots so you can enjoy those beautiful puffy blooms up close. (Platycodon grandiflorus)
Easy-to-grow Balloon Flowers were one of grandmothers favorites. The Platycodons have been around forever, and some of their biggest fans are children. They love to watch the balloons form (the buds) and then swell each day until suddenly, one special day, the pop open. These beautiful old-fashioned flowers are lovely in the garden and fine in the vase.

"Planted these Balloon Flowers from root bulbs 5 years ago and each year they've come back bigger and better. They are extremely sturdy perennials. I planted a cluster of 6 together which makes it look like one, large bush when fully bloomed, standing roughly at 3-4 ft tall. Flowers are a bright, rich purple."

yes i would buy this again
"attractive and long blooming"
— Mowerguy (4/5)
No, I wouldnt.
"They finally started blooming. Got them in pots out front with correct spacing and bone meal Came up sporadically and when they did very small flowers. Not a good product. I can grow anything."
— Chefy (2/5)
Hardy and beautiful. . . even in OK heat and wind
"HARDY !"

Beautiful Color
"These flowers have the most beautiful color. I wanted them short to hide where my Oriental Poppies had died back for the summer. These grew so tall and most did not stand up. I've had them before and they never got this tall. Will re-plant in another area with less sun light. I really liked them when they were shorter."

I would buy this product again and again!
"I have an old plant, 10+ years and grown in a container. I have very heavy clay soil so I planted these with pink perennial baby's breath in containers also, and they are on their 3rd flush of bloom. I deadhead weekly and have been so very pleased with these plants and American Meadows in general!!"

Good purchase
"I purchased about 18 balloon flowers last spring and planted them in a new garden I'm trying to grow. They bloomed beautifully for several weeks and I was quite pleased. I did note they grew from 12-24" tall, which was taller than the product description on website, but it is a non-issue for me. Now I'm on year 2 and all but 2 plants survived the New England winter weather without any extra effort or special care, which is gives the plant a star for hardiness and low-maintenance. They're already about 18" tall each - I read that you can trim the plant on/around mid-spring (before buds appear) if you want to keep them short, so I snipped a few to about half height to test. Fingers crossed they bloom and I get the desired look. Will report back."

pretty but not what I ordered - twice
"I ordered this because it was described as low height. it grew as three 2-3 ft canes. Wrote to american meadows and they kindly sent new ones but same problem occurred. Wrong variety again!"

Worth it to try
"First season I grew it in pots , the blue and also bought the white balloon flower , with some bat face flower for patriotic colors containers , all bloomed nicely in summer . Now is doing great in the garden , add some biological fungicide to your soil mix to prevent root rot , other than that is an excellent plant ,one of my favorites ."

Spectacular Color
"My balloon flowers are planted in a rock garden area in full sun bordering a walkway, with a drip line, and seem to tolerate the area nicely. The roots look hopeless on arrival, but plant them anyway - they do sprout mostly. Once up they grow fairly rapidly, making about 8" the first season. Like many perennials, they need 3 seasons or more to reach full size. The flowers are silver-dollar sized, with beautiful coloring, and each bloom lasts for 2 weeks or so, making for a long bloom season. They turn heads. I'm happy with them in my location - Beautiful!"
