Description

Sugar Buzz® ‘Rockin’ Raspberry’ Bee Balm is one of the Sugar Buzz® series of Bee Balms (Monarda). Plants in this series have good resistance to powdery mildew and a non-aggressive habit, and unlike the taller wild Bee Balms, their compact size makes them a good fit for the middle of the border. In early summer, the fragrant foliage is covered with textural 2-inch raspberry red flowers that attract all kinds of pollinators – from bees, to butterflies, to ruby-throated hummingbirds. Plant Sugar Buzz® Bee Balm in moist to average soils in a sunny spot for best bloom. Deadheading the first flush of bloom will create side shoots for a second show. Leave the seed heads standing in fall and winter to provide food for birds, and cut down in the early spring. Bee Balm has a wide native range in North America. Deadhead spent flowers to encourage fresh blooms and once flowering is complete cut the plant back to the ground to encourage healthy root growth. Divide every 3 years for maximum flowers. PP#28752

I didn't expect green

"I planted these in my garden thinking the vibrant blooms would be a wonderful addition. I even bought 2 different colors of bee balm from American Meadows just for variety. Every one of my flowers grew exceptionally quickly. They are strong and healthy and the bees LOVE them. Every one of my flowers has an odd green/white color to their blooms, despite having purchased two shades of purple. They all look exactly the same, and none of them what I thought I had purchased. They're so healthy looking but maybe I'm watering them too often, so I'm going to water more infrequently for longer, and see what next year is going to look like."

Plants are dying

"Within a week of planting the 3 plants, 1 showed signs of severe distress. It appears dead at this point. After 2 weeks of planting, a 2nd plant is showing signs of distress. I suspect it will die also. If you would like pictures of the plants, let me know in an email and I will send a couple of pictures."

Doing very well!

"I ordered these on a whim, just to try them. I was pleasantly surprised to see them grow so quickly and bloom shortly after planting. They look just like the picture. The blooms die back and I don't deadhead, but before I know it, they are back in bloom. Planted them in April of this year and today, July fourth, they are finishing their third(ish) bloom. The bees really do love them and I hope they come back next year. It has been very rainy this spring so that has probably helped."

"I have a privacy hedge and have started a perennial border in front of it. Sugar buzz looks fabulous right in front. I know it will spread, so I have it in an old red cart, which is nestled in between the whatever daisies. I also plan on drying some leaves for tea."

Doing Well

"We ordered 2. I was a little worried at first as they arrived a little banged up. Thankfully they perked up as soon as we put them in 3 gallon nursery pots. We will be planting them in our new pollinator garden within the next couple of weeks. We're in zone 8a. They seem to hold up in the wind really well. We've been having wind gusts up to 50 mph this Spring. It doesn't bother them at all! 😁"
