'Grand Cascade' Butterfly Bush is a statement-making breakthrough in Buddleia with massive panicles nearly 4” wide and 12” long with a draping, cascading habit. The softly-scented lavender flowers begin blooming in mid-summer, when many other plants have passed, drawing bees, butterflies, and hummingbirds. Butterfly Bushes are deer resistant and perfect for a sunny, well-drained border. A game-changing shrub. (Buddleia)
There are few shrubs so beloved to pollinators as Buddleia, or Butterfly Bush. Its tiny, funnel-shaped blooms are held in large, colorful panicles that are absolutely covered in butterflies and bees from mid-summer through to early fall. While not a North American native plant, the silver-green foliage stands out proudly against other late summer native staples like Magnus Echinacea or colorful Garden Phlox, and creates a wonderful environment for some of our most beloved pollinators. Butterfly Bushes are tolerant of partial shade, but grow and flower best in sunny sites with well-draining, average soils. They bloom on new wood, so cut the woody stems down within 12” of the soil line in early spring to make way for new growth.
Planting & Care
Planting Instructions for Butterfly Bushes:
Open the box immediately, protect from cold, and water each potted plant. Some of your butterfly bush plants may have new green growth and some may not. If you see no leaves, don't worry; this is normal. The roots in the pot are healthy and ready to grow in your garden.
Plant as soon as you can. If your weather cooperates (above freezing), begin planting as soon as possible. If not, keep your butterfly bushes where they get some sun through a window, and keep them moist, not soggy.
As you set out your potted butterfly bushes, dig to loosen the soil around and below the actual spot, and then set the rooted plant at the same level if was growing in the pot.
Plant your butterfly bushes about 4-6' apart, depending on the variety.
When you remove the plant from the pot, do not pull on the leaves or stems. Squeeze the pot a little and the roots and soil will slide out for you.Water well after planting, and continue to water at least every two weeks, depending on rainfall.

"I planted two of these last spring, and just ordered six more. The blossoms are beautiful, and absolutely huge compared to other butterfly bushes. I don't yet know how they will survive our winters (I'm borderline zone 4 or 5, and usually lose about a quarter of my butterfly bushes over their first winter), but was very impressed with their first year."
