Squeeze Box® Inkberry Holly is the native evergreen with backbone. This sleek, naturally columnar selection of Ilex glabra holds glossy, deep-green foliage from the very base of the plant straight to its top, with no awkward bare ankles that older inkberries are known for. Tight habit, easy care, no shearing required, just clean upright structure year-round.
Reaching 4-6 feet tall and 2-3 feet wide, Squeeze Box® is ideal where you need a narrow native hedge, a foundation accent, a privacy screen, or evergreen structure in a tight space. Small, bee-friendly white flowers appear in mid to late spring. This is a male cultivar, which means it doesn't bear berries itself, but it's exactly the pollinator you want planted within 50 feet of female inkberries like Strongbox® if you want them to produce their dark winter fruit. Two birds, one shrub.
Native to the coastal plain of eastern North America from Nova Scotia all the way to Florida and Louisiana, this inkberry is built for tough sites. It tolerates flooding and salt, prefers acidic, well-drained soils, and is happily deer-resistant and low-maintenance. Plant it as a hedge, in a row of containers flanking a doorway, or wherever you want sculpted, year-round native greenery.
