How do we use your location?
Knowing your location helps us recommend plants that will thrive in your climate, based on your Growing Zone.
3-4” tall x 6-8" wide and spreading. The delightful Red Heart Hens and Chicks (Sempervivum) is a great plant for gardening with kids, and beloved by beginning and veteran gardeners alike. From bold texture to rich color, Red Heart is at home in almost any style garden. And its exceptionally easy to grow. Excellent drainage is a must for hens and chicks as these plants do not like their feet (roots) wet. Use a well-draining gravel mix in containers. Plants thrive in the poorest of soils and tolerate heat and drought once established. The common name hens and chicks refers to the plant’s growth habit. Spring growth brings rings of tiny new offsets or “chicks” surrounding the mature central rosette or “hen”. Chicks will develop their own root system and can be removed to expand plantings. Allow some chicks to remain in place, as mature hens die after flowering and the chicks take her place in the garden, eventually becoming hens themselves. Dead rosettes can be removed after flowering by gently pulling at the base.
