White Turtlehead features a tall spiky flower, similar to a snapdragon, but with a tighter, boxier bloom that upon closer inspection does look just like a turtle's head! Set against dark green foliage, these extraordinary blooms come into their own in late summer, when many other plants have passed. Makes an excellent addition to natural gardens and along streams. Turtlehead is deer resistant, attracts butterflies and thrives in part shade to full sun. (Chelone glabra)

The turtleheads are favorite No. American wildflowers for moist shaded areas. They love streambanks and thickets, and add fascinating bloom to the scene with their unusual turtle head-shaped flowers.

Planting & Care

When White Turtlehead (Chelone glabra) arrives in the fall, it will be in a dormant state. They have healthy full root systems even below the pots. (The plants were growing all summer but had a necessary 'haircut' for travel, leaving bare stems as the foliage and flowers were trimmed away). White Turtlehead has hollow stems and are cut tall so that water will not get all the way to the crown over the winter, causing them to rot. For this reason it is best to leave the sticks "as is" till next spring.

"This juvenile plant is still establishing in my garden; it is twice the size as when it arrived the previous season, which is good, but I think that it is going to require another year before I am able to discern what its true performance will be. This white variety which is less common, seems more diminutive in size and growth habit than the pink chelone, but this purchase was one of experiment and exploration. If you are in a big hurry for "wow" I would not recommend this plant, but if you are of the more patient nature, why not?"
