There is pure magic in a planting of Whirling Butterflies Gaura. Slender, graceful stems carry snowy white flowers with a hint of pink, each shaped like a tiny butterfly in mid-flight. The result is a lovely fluttering effect that brings movement and airy texture to beds, borders and containers.
Beneath that delicate look is a true workhorse. This long-blooming perennial flowers from late spring into fall and grows from a thick taproot that helps it stand up to heat and drought. Its flowers attract bumblebees, butterflies and hummingbirds, it is deer resistant, and it looks its best planted in groups or mass plantings where its tall, wispy habit can really shine. Once settled in, it prefers to stay put, so choose a sunny, well-drained spot it can call home.
Fun fact: Gaura is native to the prairies and pinelands of Louisiana and Texas, and goes by sweet nicknames like Wandflower and Lindheimer’s Beeblossom. Its species name honors Ferdinand Lindheimer, a 19th-century Texas plant collector, and botanists moved it into the evening primrose genus, Oenothera, in the early 2000s.
