There are sunflowers, and then there's Bright Star Orange. This standout cultivar grows 6 to 8 feet tall and throws blooms up to 11 inches wide: deep, golden petals radiating outward in a long-pointed, spider mum–like form around a warm ochre-brown center. It's unusual enough to stop people mid-stride, but it grows as easily as any sunflower you've ever planted.
Because it's a branching variety and open-pollinated, Bright Star Orange works overtime. Rather than putting everything into one towering stem, it branches freely and keeps sending up new blooms from midsummer well into fall. That open-pollinated status also means the seeds it drops, and the ones you save, will come back true the following season if you let them. Just real seeds doing what seeds do.
The wildlife value is real and generous. While it's blooming, the flowers draw bees, butterflies, and hummingbirds with reliable nectar and pollen (this is not a pollenless cut-flower type; it gives back). When the season winds down, leave a few heads standing rather than cutting everything back. Goldfinches, sparrows, and other seed-eating birds will work through them all winter. It's an easy way to make your garden pull double duty: beautiful in July and a food source in December.
Plant Bright Star Orange at the back of a border, along a fence line, or massed together for a wall of color that's hard to match late in summer. It pairs beautifully with other warm-toned annuals and holds its own in a cut flower arrangement. Stems last 7 to 14 days in a vase when cut in the morning just before the bloom fully opens.
