This close relative of the carnation is one of the wildflowers that was taken directly into gardens from the wild. Of course, there are also hundreds of hybrids made from this flower and others in the “pink” family. The wide range of colors and bi-colored blooms make this a truly spectacular wildflower in meadows. A big favorite.

"I ordered a variety of wildflower seeds for a patch. I naively assumed American Meadows would sell native seeds, or at least indicate seeds are non-native. While this isn't a banned invasive species like the Dame's Rocket they also sell, it is not a native plant so not a good fit for growing native wildflower patches. It is very pretty and came in well in the second year. It's not overwhelming other plants. I probably won't pull them as I have been with the Dame's Rocket."

"Plant now for color starting next season and beyond! Very easy to grow in partial shade to sunny. Blooms late spring even in northern climates, gone by mid-August. Long-lasting cut flowers. Naturalizes and multiplies each year. No maintenance required."

"I have several well-kept flowers gardens. But there is a part of my yard that I leave wild. (no raking, etc. ) I call this my woodland garden. I have a stone path going through it. Every couple years I throw (by hand) the Sweet William seeds in my woodland garden. They come up the following year and are an absolute pleasure.
