Shooting Star is a hardy wildflower native to North America with striking blooms that appear in late spring. Delicate, dart-like blossoms with peeled-back petals dangle from tall stems and vary in shades of white (most common) and pink (less common). Two colorful bands of deep purple and golden yellow circle the base of each flower. A simply exceptional addtion to shady spots. PPAF (Dodecatheon meadia)
To determine if a plant is sufficiently cold hardy, the USDA created numbered zones indicating winter low
temperatures; the lower the zone number the colder the winter.
If the coldest winter temperature expected in your area is -15°F (zone 5) then any plants rated zones 3-5 will
survive the winter temperatures in your area.
If you live in very warm winter areas (zones 9-11) plants with zones 3-4 ratings are not recommended. The lack
of freezing winter temperatures do not provide a time for winter dormancy (rest).
It's easy to see how this wildflower got its common name. The flowers are arrayed on a tall stem, they are star shaped, and they're pointed straight down. The whole plant is handsome, with flowers ranging from white to pink to even a dark purple, and its dependably perennial, even in the coldest climates.
Growing Shooting Stars: This plant is so popular, and has been gathered so widely, it is now on the protected list in several states. Its happy in deciduous shade, but not too close to trees. Give it plenty of moisture, and if your soil is very acid, this species will appreciate a little dolomitic lime in the fall.
