How do we use your location?
Knowing your location helps us recommend plants that will thrive in your climate, based on your Growing Zone.
Vervain is one of those super-historic wildflowers that are common over most of the world. Vervain appears in Roman history, as a plant used to soak in fuel and then use as a torch.
It's a wild verbena (which you can tell by the botanical name), and you'll find it in meadows and along roadsides in the entire US and Canada. The plants grow up to 5 or 6 feet, and are topped by stunning blue flowers in pointed spikes. They look much like garden salvia or veronica. The flower stems are arranged like a candelabra at the end of each stalk.
This is a good, non-invasive plant for your wild garden--just add it near the back of your wildflowers, or spot a few throughout a meadow. The blooms open in midsummer through fall. And by the way, they're beautiful standing tall in big wildlfower arrangements.

"This tall, showy wildflower / sacred herb loves to grow near water but will thrive in the garden as well. They germinate best by being sprinkled on disturbed earth in late fall. In the spring they will look like nettles and stay small the first year with spotty flowering. The second year they will be twice as tall, flowering nicely. The third year they come into their prime and become large specimen plants about 6' tall and will produce broomlike seed heads that can be harvested when they are brown and dry and just beat around where you want them established near ponds, creeks, and ditches."
"This is a vibrant eye catching wildflower, that easily self seeds, and grows wild in pastures, roadsides, and untended fallow ground. It is however somewhat weedy in appearance. I personally like it very much, but it is not to everyones taste."
