Description

Make up your own mix, or plant a huge drift of yellow. Yellow Mammoth never disappoints, and is a knock-out against early springs deep green lawns. Yellow Mammoth is the largest crocus of them all, with blooms sometimes as wide as 4 inches, and it's a classic. It's been cultivated in gardens since the seventeenth century!

Planting in the lawn is simple, since the bulbs are so small, and the effect in spring is a real treat. The more you plant, the better it will look. One caveat: If you plant in the lawn, wait 6 weeks after flowers bloom to mow.

Best crocus I have grown

"I planted 20 and 20 grew and bloomed. Many had more than one flower per plant. These are a fantastic color. They looked great with Dutch Master Daffodils. They close up in late afternoon and reopen in the morning so make sure to look at them before going to work if you work during the day. I've mostly given up on crocus because the squirrels and chipmunks dig them all up but I planted these with alliums and daffodils and the critters hardly touched them so I guess that's the secret."

Deer love them!

"These crocus are not the early species variety but later in April/May. You cannot mow over them right away and the grass gets fairly long before you can mow. However, they are large and showy, especially in clusters. If you have no bulbs blossoming, it might be because of deer. I found out that they were eating them to the point of killing the bulb. Now I go out early March and spread deer repellent over the area, and also use red pepper that I buy in bulk."

"I love crocuses. . . they are always the first to pop up when Spring is near! I planted about 4 separate groups with around 5 bulbs each in my front yard perennial garden bed right at the border. ! actually think there were more than 20 bulbs which was a nice bonus! The colors were beautiful and they lasted for quite some time. These were up in early February since we had such a mild winter here."
