Meadow Anemone, also known as Canada Anemone, produces a flush of showy white flowers in early to mid-spring. The charming and abundant upward-facing blooms attract bees and butterflies. This hardy native perennial spreads vigorously by rhizome, producing clusters of attractive, deeply lobed foliage that is highly resistant to deer and rabbits. This native wildflower naturalizes well in moist areas of the garden, making an ideal groundcover or rain garden feature. (Anemone canadensis)

Description

Meadow Anemone is easy to grow in moist loamy, sandy, or clay soils and will spread under favorable conditions to form a dense colony. Plants thrive in partial shade, but can tolerate full sun in cooler parts of their range. Avoid heavy shade as flower stalks may grow too long and flop. Meadow Anemone supports small native bee species as well as Syrphid flies that feed on pollen. This adaptable plant is native to river margins, flood plains, and wet meadows throughout southern Canada, and in the United States from New England to the Rocky Mountains, south to Virginia, Kentucky, Missouri, and Kansas. These hardy perennials can be grown in zones 3-8, and perform best in average soil, rich soil, sandy soil, and medium to wet soils with good drainage. Flowering may decrease as clumps become crowded; thin as needed in the fall. Toxic if consumed in large quantities.
