How do we use your location?
Knowing your location helps us recommend plants that will thrive in your climate, based on your Growing Zone.
The Wild Columbines Many people think columbines are the loveliest flowers of all, and they are certainly important in the wildflower world. Many important species are North American natives. Everyone in the Northeast loves the Wild Eastern Columbine, the beautiful smallish red one, Aquilegia canadensis, and of course, everyone in the Rockies loves the State Flower of Colorado, the large, blue Colorado Columbine, A. caerulea. There are important species native to Europe and Japan as well.

"Bought three plants and they all came up and flowered. Flowers were very small. Hoping for better blooms next year. Plants are being stripped by rabbits. A continual battle around here."
"Last year I had store bought columbine roots and out of eight, only one survived. I bought three from American Meadows this year and all three are thriving. They have great quality plants. Don't be fooled into thinking otherwise when you see them bare root or tiny seedlings when they arrive. They might be a little more expensive, especially with shipping, but worth the investment."
"The so called collection turned out to be only one shade of blue. Boring."
"These are much taller, more graceful, and more subtle than I expected. Not a single color repeat yet, and at least one double in the bunch."
"I purchased bare roots last spring and planted them in a mostly-sunny/part-shade garden spot. Nice small green plants came up in the summer. This year they were double the size with tall, lovely spikes of pink or purple flowers - not the plant in the online catalog picture, but a very nice one all the same. Maybe they're some other sort of columbine?"
"Easy to get going right away in my shady garden on edge of forest. Waiting to see them come back next year. They bloom before most of the other summer perrenials."
"almost gave just 3 stars, but not fair since our Summer was so rainy! maybe in a better Summer it would have done better. My wild ones did much better. Would not recommend for a wet area but think it would be great in a drier place."
"Lovely variety of colors. They brighten an area of the garden that has little other color at that time of spring. They are in a sunny, well drained area, and the foilage is enjoyable even after the flowers are gone."
"Beautiful flowers. I was surprised to see a rebloom in August, as I had never seen that in a Columbine. The variety of colors brightens up an area where most of the other flowers will not bloom for another month."
"Within a week of planting, these are growing fast. I believe they will do very well."
