How do we use your location?
Knowing your location helps us recommend plants that will thrive in your climate, based on your Growing Zone.
About Astilbes: Easy to grow, tough and hardy, Astilbes are now a mainstay in all good perennial gardens. In fact, American gardeners are in the midst of a passionate love affair with Astilbes. Native to the far east, these beautiful plants and their hybrids have revolutionized the perennial possibilities of moist, shaded American gardens. They are companions of ferns and our favorite annuals, impatiens--one of the few flowers that make big color in full or partial shade.
The vast majority of the scores of hybrids now available are the work of one man, master hybridizer Georg Arends (Yes, that's why you keep seeing arendsii tacked onto hybrid names.) Mr. Arends, working in Ronsdorf, Germany spent decades hybridizing Sedums, Phlox, Campanulas....and his first love, Astilbes. In 1933, Arends introduced 74 different Astilbe cultivars, and there have been hundreds since.
These plume-flowered plants have ultra-handsome fern-like foliage, (usually dark glossy green) and stiff stems that always hold the elegant plumes aloft without any staking. Flower arrangers find the flower plumes are just as handsome in a vase as in a garden.
From tiny dwarfs to big draping hybrids, Astilbes are all quite easy to grow, as long as their ground does not dry out for long. They must have plenty of moisture, so choose your locations carefully.

"I have only tried bare root planting this year. I bought hardy geraniums and these Adtilbes. Nith have grown beautifully I'm very pleased with the results and plan on getting more plants that way next year."
"Beautiful color. Great border plant"
"We really like the astible, however 2 of the 6 roots that we purchased did not germinate."
"I planted these in the fall (along with lots of other bulbs) but nothing came up! I put them in 3 different sites but not even one came up while the rest of the other bulbs did."
"I bought the astilbe less than 2 months ago and they're growing quickly! I tend to forget to water them (and even forgot to give them light for 2 weeks) but they bounced back. Very hardy and healthy plants. I've keeping them in a makeshift greenhouse to keep them out of the wind and volatile temperatures, and away from the cicadas."
"All three came up in really the most inhospitable of conditions (wet and dark). I am really looking forward to something besides hostas in my shade garden."
"All of them survived and are doing great. A bit on the small side but that should improve next season. Deer and rabbits have ignored them."
"great product"
"I bought 1 bag of Montgomery Astilbe and 1 bag of Amethyst Astilbe (totally 6 plants) this year. All arrived healthy and in good shape. After one week of planting, I saw leaves are beginning to grow. It is easy to plant and in good price too. I am so glad I bought it."
"I just planted them this summer, so they haven't had a chance to bloom yet. But the three plants are all doing well and looking very healthy."
