Downy Skullcap is a quietly stunning native perennial that earns its spot in any pollinator-forward garden. Soft, slightly fuzzy gray-green foliage forms a tidy upright clump topped in mid to late summer with spires of hooded, lavender-purple blooms shaped like little snapdragons. The flowers are irresistible to bumblebees, native bees, and other beneficial pollinators just when many spring bloomers are winding down.
Native to the eastern and central United States, Downy Skullcap is a member of the mint family but well-behaved in the garden, forming neat clumps rather than running. It reaches 24-36 inches tall with an 18-24 inch spread, slotting beautifully into pollinator borders, meadow plantings, prairie restorations, and woodland edges. Once established, it shrugs off drought and adapts willingly to sandy or clay soils with average to dry moisture.
