When the garden is just waking up, Golden Groundsel arrives like a burst of sunshine. Cheerful clusters of golden-yellow, daisy-like flowers rise above a dense mat of rounded, dark green leaves, glowing through early and mid spring when most other plants are still emerging from winter dormancy.
This adaptable native wildflower loves moist, shady spots, making it a natural for woodland gardens, rain gardens and the edges of shady borders, and it also grows in full sun where the soil stays moist. Once established, it spreads by rhizomes into a lush, weed-suppressing groundcover, and its basal leaves often stay green through winter. A mildly toxic compound in the foliage keeps deer away, and it pairs beautifully with ferns and sedges.
Fun fact: Also known as Golden Ragwort, this early bloomer has been shown to support a wide diversity of pollinators, including sweat bees, tiny carpenter bees and hoverflies. Leave the fluffy seed heads in place and small birds will enjoy them too.
