Have an area that needs some plant cover? Hay-Scented Fern’s lacy green fronds wave from upright plants that will thrive in shade to part-shade, and even sun if the soil is moist. Growing from 18-24" tall, Hay-Scented Fern will spread quickly to form colonies that can cover a large expanse. When the fronds are disturbed, the lovely scent of summertime hay wafts through the air. (Dennstaedtia punctilobula)

Patience is key

"I managed to get the bares roots into pots just before they dried out from my own neglect. At first I thought I had missed my window but after a few weeks the shoots started appearing and by summer I had some healthy ferns. Unfortunately, the summer drought and milkweed bugs from a nearby plant totally destroyed the ferns before I got the chance to put them in the ground. Hoping this year I will be more attentive so I can add them under the trees in my yard."

Disappointed in Hay Scented Fern

"The roots were very thin and didn't appear vigorous when they arrived. One of them never emerged and the other one was diminutive and died before the end of June."

Poor quality root stock

"The root stock was too tiny to thrive."

Patience paid off

"My first caveat would be that the root clumps are VERY small. They're well packed but easy to lose in the moss packing. One bag turned out entirely moss and there was no stock to replace, but they refunded immediately. I'd say about 5/8have come up so far, be patient! It took over two weeks. I'm not sure if sending slightly more mature roots or larger portions would help, but the tiny one inch pieces seem to be the ones that haven't come up yet. I ordered a second set bare root with live growth somewhere else and those are doing MUCH better. Would be willing to try again next year, but hope they are a little more vigorous in the next batch."
