A great choice for moist, shady gardens, this big plant forms a large canopy of leaves and sends up bright yellow flower spikes in the middle of summer. A hummingbird favorite. (Ligularia stenocephala)

Never grew, just died.

"My Rocket Golden Ray never grew. Just died in the ground. Very very disappointed. All my other flowers and plants have never looked better than this year."

Find a moist place for this plant

"This plant does need moist soil. I planted it in a shaded area because I needed something that can fill the area but I guess it wasn't as moist as this plant needs it to be. It is rather limping along but it is my fault. When I water it does perk right back up, though. A deer has taken some of its leaves but it doesn't seem to be badly damaged by it. Plant it where the soil is moist!"

Looking good so far!

"I planted three of these on the north side of the house in the shade, looking to add some interest and brighten the area up. They're just starting to take off now and I can't wait!"

Totally stunning!

"This is an incredible plant if you get the growing conditions right. We bought six of them about 4-5 years ago. Originally planted them in half sun, half shade on a slight slope. They didn't do very well there and two died. We decided to move them to a mostly shaded area where they get very limited sunlight. The area is also flat, so that the water doesn't run down the slope. The remaining four plants are now thriving! These plants need LOTS of water - I water them nearly every day, especially when it's hot. Don't let them dry out - they will not be happy! When in the right conditions they are fantastic, eye-catching plants. Of all the plants in our yard, these are the ones that get the most attention from guests."

Grows Well in a Container

"I have successfully grown this plant and had it flower in a large plastic pot buried in my garden in 1/2 day of sun. I keep the potting mix consistently moist. I originally had it in the same pot in dappled shade, and it did OK, but didn't really thrive. At times it wilts slightly on hot days, but recovers in the evening. It has very attractive foliage, which I mostly grow it for. Likes some sun, but needs LOTS of moisture!"

this will take time

"I planted 3 in moist, shady spots. 2 died. The 3rd is getting started, and I hope in a couple of seasons will be a good addition to the garden."

doing well

"Plant arrived healthy in beautiful shape. It is now about 18 inches to 2 ft tall. It did not flower this year. It is in a bed with mint, hydrangea and elephant ears. It is easy to grow but it would be helpful to know how long it takes to maturity and flowering. I do plan to purchase more next spring."
