Little Red Fox Little Bluestem brings the bold autumn drama of native prairie grasses into a tidy, garden-friendly size. An introduction from Intrinsic Perennials, this compact selection emerges in spring with cool blue-green blades, then begins its transformation: red tones develop by midsummer, deepening into a blaze of fiery red, copper, and orange as the temperatures cool. Airy seed heads catch the late-day light from late summer well into winter, when the dried foliage glows in shades of amber and rust against the snow.
At 24-30 inches tall and 18-24 inches wide, Little Red Fox stays upright and tidy without the flopping that taller little bluestems can be prone to, making it an excellent choice for front-to-mid borders, mass plantings, slopes, and rain gardens. Birds feast on the seeds in fall and winter, and the dense clumps offer cover for beneficial insects when the garden is dormant.
A tough native that tolerates drought, occasional flooding, humidity, and lean soils, this little bluestem is also delightfully deer-resistant and resistant to most pests and diseases. Plant in full sun for the strongest coloration and most upright form, and cut it back close to the ground in late winter to make way for the next year's show.
