If you love Black-Eyed Susans, meet their exuberant cousin. Brown Eyed Susan is an airy, many-branched native that throws up hundreds of small, golden-yellow daisies, each with a dark brown eye. Compared to its famous cousin, it grows taller, blooms later and longer, and carries clouds of smaller flowers, lighting up the garden from late summer through fall.
This native wildflower provides nectar and pollen for bees and butterflies, and in fall its seeds feed American Goldfinches and other songbirds. Though it is a biennial or short-lived perennial, it self-sows freely to return year after year. It tolerates heat, drought and deer, and it is an excellent choice for borders, wildflower meadows, pollinator gardens and cutting. Pair it with asters and ornamental grasses for a luscious fall display.
Fun fact: The species name triloba means "three-lobed," describing its distinctive lower leaves. The genus honors Olof Rudbeck, the Swedish botanist who taught Linnaeus, and Brown Eyed Susan is a host plant for the Silvery Checkerspot butterfly.
