Hens and chicks also make a good addition to living walls and green roof plantings, as well as stylish container specimens. Plants have a unique growth pattern with each mature rosette or hen sending out small rosettes or chicks each spring. In this way, plants grow into dense clumps. Hens live for about three years before sending up a large, thick flower stalk bearing star-shaped blooms. Hens die after flowering, making space for the developing chicks to take over and begin making their own offsets to continue he cycle. Plants are easy to grow, but require well-drained soil. Gravel or sandy mixes work well for containers. This low maintenance plant is deer resistant and drought tolerant once established.
