Bold, upright and beautifully glossy, Southern Wood Fern, sometimes called Shield Fern, brings lush texture to the shade garden. Its fresh green fronds rise in a graceful, vase-shaped clump that slowly expands over time, softening shady corners, woodland borders, pond edges and streambanks.
A true Southern native, this fern grows wild in swamps and wet woods across the Southeast, so it takes moist soil and occasional flooding in stride, yet it adapts well to average garden conditions in rich, moist soil. In mild, protected areas the fronds stay green through winter, giving you evergreen interest when the rest of the shade garden has gone to sleep. It is deer resistant and happy in part to full shade.
The species name ludoviciana means "of Louisiana." Look closely and you'll see this fern produces two kinds of fronds: the spore-bearing fertile fronds grow taller and more upright, with leaflets distinctly narrower than the rest, a trait found only in this species. Southern Wood Fern is also a parent of the Log Fern, the Crested Wood Fern and the popular Dixie Wood Fern.
