‘Blue Ribbons’ Woodland Phlox fills out with fragrant, light lavender flower clusters in spring, giving bees and butterflies an important source of early-season nourishment. This native cultivar features semi-evergreen variegated foliage edged with cream-colored borders, and in the cooler seasons, the leaves take on a lovely red hue. Ideal for use as a gently spreading groundcover for shade that provides a long season of interest, ‘Blue Ribbons’ is also a fantastic filler for containers and small spaces with dappled shade.

Description

Blue Ribbons Woodland Phlox (Phlox divaricata 'Blue Ribbons' PP34928) is a variegated cultivar that was introduced in 2022 by Juniper Level Botanic Garden in North Carolina. It’s easy to maintain and has good resistance to heat, humidity, and coastal conditions. This compact perennial is a perfect groundcover for spring-blooming bulbs. It will fill in spaces in the garden where late-sprouting perennials take their time to emerge. When flowering is done, the foliage will maintain an attractive appearance. Woodland Phlox will spread over time, creating a lovely floral carpet. Native to Eastern North America, Woodland Phlox prefer part shade with moist, well-drained soil. Once established it is quite drought-tolerant and deer-resistant. Cut back after the first bloom to encourage a second bloom, and discourage pests such as spider mites or powdery mildew.
