Soft, feathery and endlessly elegant, Lady Fern brings a delicate, lacy texture to the shade garden. Its finely divided, bright yellow-green fronds arch gracefully from a central crown, forming a lush, shuttlecock-like clump that softens shady corners, woodland paths and pond margins.
In spring, Lady Fern greets the season with a breathtaking flush of new fronds, and fresh leaves keep appearing all season for a continuously fresh look. This easy-to-grow native fern is at home in moist woods, meadows and streambanks across North America, and it thrives in rich, moist soil in part to full shade. Compared to many ferns, it is more tolerant of sun and dry soil, and it can handle more sun as long as the soil stays moist. Best of all, deer and rabbits leave it alone.
The name filix-femina means "fern-lady," a nod to its delicate fronds compared to its sturdier cousin, the Male Fern, Dryopteris filix-mas. The genus name Athyrium comes from the Greek for "doorless," referring to the slow-opening covers that protect its spores.
