How do we use your location?
Knowing your location helps us recommend plants that will thrive in your climate, based on your Growing Zone.
'Melody Dora' Dahlia is excellent, particularly for containers. It's vigorous, covered with blooms, and will flower from mid-summer through fall. Sporting colors of peach, orange, yellow and violet, it will give you all you need in one pot! Like others in the Melody series, foliage is compact and continuously sends up shiny new flower buds throughout the season, renewing your container displays and providing cut flowers for the house.
Dahlias are perennial in zones 8-10, but in cooler zones, tubers can be dug after frost comes, stored over winter, then re-planted the following spring. Grow Dahlias in a sunny spot, in average soil that drains well. Keep moisture consistent once it begins to grow and enjoy a non-stop color parade. Deadhead spent blooms to encourage more flowers and pinch off small side buds to encourage larger flowers if desired.
As soon as your order is placed you will receive a confirmation email. You will receive a second email the day your order ships telling you how it has been sent. Some perennials are shipped as potted plants, some as perennial roots packed in peat. The ‘Plant Information’ section describes how that item will ship. All perennials and fall-planted bulbs are packaged to withstand shipping and are fully-guaranteed. Please open upon receipt and follow the instructions included.
Perennials and fall-planted bulbs are shipped at the proper planting time for your Growing Zone. Perennial and fall-planted bulb orders will arrive separately from seeds. If your order requires more than one shipment and all items are shipping to the same address, there is no additional shipping charge. See our shipping information page for approximate ship dates and more detailed information. If you have any questions, please call Customer Service at (802) 227-7200 or contact us by email or chat.

"I planted three of these dahlias back in early June. Unfortunately, only one of them took, but taking care of it has resulted in a beautiful bloom! It's now mid-October, and I'm really getting to appreciate this flower in its vibrant glory. This flower came to me as tubers, I think they were called - they looked like old sweet potatoes on some twine… Be careful about which side you put facing up, and how far down they are planted. My gut instinct was totally wrong, but thankfully, I read the directions just before planting and avoided totally annihilating all three bulbs. I'm not sure what went wrong with the other two; I was watering them all on the same schedule and planted them all just the same, but it still could have been my fault the other two didn't even begin to bloom. I'm a new gardener, so I don't have more to offer as to what happened. Seeing this bright, gorgeous bloom has been worth the learning curve. I put it in a spot facing the road because I wanted others to be able to enjoy it as well! The yellow and orange and pink tones are easily visible from a whiles away, so I hope passersby see it and it makes them feel as happy as it makes me feel."
"These are gorgeous and luminous, blooming from late June through frost, until the end of October in Cape Cod, MA, after starting a few weeks in advance in greenhouse. They do need staking as they keep producing more and more blooms with deadheading."
"This was my first time planting dahlias and the Melody Dora was the first variety to bloom. It's a gorgeous dahlia and I am happy with my purchase."
"This is my first year growing dahlias, and I ordered an assortment. I'm in prairie soil in Alabama, and some simply didn't like the soil or climate :(. Some the squirrels inhaled :(. This one I started in the ground, and it came up but basically did nothing. Got maybe four inches tall and sat there. So I finally dug it up and put it in a big pot with Miracle Grow Moisture Control soil. It is SPECTACULAR!!!! Absolutely stunning! Covered in huge hardy blooms, last a long time with more coming every day. I am ordering more!!!!!!"
"I am just getting started growing dahlias and I have to say this was a great choice! There are so many flowers on the plants! I would recommend this variety to anyone!"
"This one has done good in the Florida heat so far. Grow three tubbers in 15 gal grow bag. In full afternoon sun. Ever afternoon I mist down good. Found in Florida that you plant about 6" deep. Once they get about a foot I mulch with 3" of mushroom compost and fine pine bark. Even though we get a lot of rain, still water 3 time a week and fertilize once a week. Hardest thing to learn has been pinching correctly."
"Very easy to grow"
"These dahlias are hearty and beautiful and enhance my garden in general."
"This dahlia was very healthy and produced a nice amount of beautiful 5" blooms. It was a favorite of my garden visitors."
"Very nice plants with tons of flowers. The plant keeps on producing. Flowers are about 4 inches across and strong. My only disappointment is that the color is in no way as brilliant as the flowers on the website. My flowers and a butter yellow with a very pale pink. But at least they did grow!"
