"This was my first time growing an elephant ear, and it won't be the last! This bulb took a few weeks to get going, but once it did it put on a great show! I love the visual interest of the purple stems & leaf shape. I have it planted in a pot on my north facing balcony. The fact that such a beautiful plant can thrive in shade is a gift! One important note- this elephant ear definitely isn't going to reach its full potential in the first year. The true splendor of large, bi-color leaves is expected in subsequent seasons. I can't wait! I was pleasantly surprised by how many individual stems grew from a single bulb. Before the frost, I will either bring the pot in and enjoy as an indoor plant, or dig up the bulb and store over winter to be replanted next spring. Happy gardening!"
"There was a lengthy time between planting and sprouting. The gardener definitely needs to keep these watered. I did but still a long time before sprouting. Possibly next year I will start these inside in small pots and then transplant."
"Echoing some of the other comments -- this plant didn't grow to the size as expected. It was planted in a very large container (abt 20") underplanted with coleus, but never reached its potential. I feel confident it was properly cared as this isn't my first time with colocasias. The plant maxxed out somewhere between 9-12" by July. Perhaps it was a mistake to underplant it? You can see in the images it was dwarfed by the coleus, regardless of how heavily I cut the coleus back. When I took it out in the fall, roots were strong, but definitely didn't take advantage of all the room it had! I stored the bulb regardless and will definitely plant again next year. . . see how it performs in a pot solo. The plant itself has beautiful rhubarb/crimson stems. Looking forward to seeing it flourish next season! Mid-level gardener, Zone 7 NJ."
"I was hoping this elephant ear got a little bigger. It's only about 2. 5 feet tall."
"a nice plant once it starts growing"
"Gorgeous plant, the colors are coming through very bright. Hardy specimen. One of my absolute favorites. Thank you!"
"This is a great plant and looks wonderful in summer containers with annuals. My plant has darker leaves than the image shown. That could be growing conditions though. I haven't stored it over winter yet, so I don't know how easy it will be to regrow in following years."
