How do we use your location?
Knowing your location helps us recommend plants that will thrive in your climate, based on your Growing Zone.
Sparaxis, also called Harlequin Flower, boasts jewel toned flowers with bright yellow throats, edged in black. The bloom is reminiscent of the Harlequin's collar, hence the common name!
Happy in full sun, plant it along borders, in a rock garden, or anyplace its bright, unusual flowers can be appreciated. Drought tolerant, water freely during flower growth, but it’s not fussy and will do well with minimal care. Sparaxis are cold hardy to zone 9, and will do well with a deep mulch down to zone 7. In colder zones, grow Sparaxis as an annual, or lift the corms before frost and store in a cool, dry place to be replanted in Spring.

"Disappointingly, my sparaxis bulbs did not come up. I don't know if the problem was something I did or did not do, or if it was the bulbs. However the bulbs I bought for my daughter did come up & bloomed. I will try planting them again."
"The colors were fabulous. I planted them in the Fall of 2019 and they certainly multiplied in one year. They also have a relatively long blooming period, about three weeks, similar to freesia. Harlequins are favorite bulb. I'm ordering more."
"I love these. They are easy and unusual -- a nice addition to my other bulbs and annuals in my beds."
"I live in Zone 9b-10 (climate change is changing our designation), and Sparaxis comes up every spring. The patches expand or recede depending upon the winter rainfall. It's a cheery and vibrant greeting for the new year, but clearly thrives in this zone and I don't think it does well in areas with colder winters."
