USDA Hardiness Planting Zones

To determine if a plant is sufficiently cold hardy, the USDA created numbered zones indicating winter low temperatures; the lower the zone number the colder the winter.

  • If the coldest winter temperature expected in your area is -15°F (zone 5) then any plants rated zones 3-5 will survive the winter temperatures in your area.
  • If you live in very warm winter areas (zones 9-11) plants with zones 3-4 ratings are not recommended. The lack of freezing winter temperatures do not provide a time for winter dormancy (rest).

What's in this Mix?

Our Fall Maximum Wildflower Seed Mix is a seasonal favorite for any gardener! Every year, The Seed Man puts together a one-of-a-kind wildflower seed mix designed specifically for fall planting. This year, our "Fall Max Mix" contains 45 different varieties - just about double the variety in most of our seed mixes! We’ve included 26 annual flowers for quick color in the first growing season, plus 19 perennial and biennial wildflowers that will bloom in the second and successive seasons. See the chart below for an overview of the wildflowers in this mix.

Planting in colder northern climates: plan for a dormant fall planting, then enjoy colorful wildflowers from spring through fall. Plant wildflower seeds in fall after a few killing frosts, but before a hard freeze. Your wildflower seeds will lay dormant over the winter for a jump start on growth in spring. Fall-planted seeds typically germinate and bloom weeks ahead of spring planted seeds!

Planting in warmer climates: plant in fall for beautiful color! The annual wildflowers will bloom about 6-8 weeks after planting, while perennials grow their foliage and establish root systems. The they burst into bloom in the second season.

See our Fall Planting Instructions provide step-by-step planting instructions for fall. As always, this mixture contains 100% pure, non-GMO wildflower seed, and it is guaranteed to brighten up your garden this coming spring and for many years to come. Quantities are limited, so order now!
